Hustler Wisconsin via Sparta - Elroy Trail (continued)

After beers in tunnel we finished the ride through, headed of to Norwalk, WI. 3 miles downhill coast, rolled up to bar called the place around 12:30am. Walk in only 3-4 people in bar, just ordered up beers when Jerry the Limo driver walk out of bathroom we decided to yell where's that limo driver that knocked up our 14 year old sister, took him a minute to remember us from 2005. Drank a few beers with him until they kicked us out at 2:00. Jerry had them set beer out back door, off to his house up the street for a couple more beers, and some sleep.

Friday: Rode down to cafe for breakfast and trail pass around 9am. Okay breakfast was better the last time. Out of trail passes at cafe, told us there was couple more places in town
(or as they called it a Village) went down to little market in town who was also out of passes, they sent us to Lil's Corner Tap, what a misstake, bar wasn't open but, owner was there Kevin, said come on in. this was around 10am

Started on the vodka Lemonades

We hung around there for sometime, had a few cocktails, played a couple games of darts, drank a few more beers then we had been there long enough most of the lunch crowd had left, few people from Texas, Boston, and other places can't remember. Decided to have some lunch. (we are still in are town we rode to last night 11 miles.)
Good steak sandwich with hashbrowns for lunch time line around 3pm, Jim was talking on phone to Deb, she was telling him that he was slurring words, he kept asking us if he was slurring. Jeff and I decided around 4 to start down trail because we all was trashed, headed out downthe trail towards tunnel #2 which was only 4 miles away, walked through tunnel because all people around, coasted the 2 miles into Wilton. Stayed in Wilton for a few minutes then decided to make Kendall which was 9 miles away, 6 miles to Tunnel

and a 3 mile coast into town................

Hustler Wisconsin via Sparta - Elroy Trail

Planned a pilgrimage Back to Hustler, Wisconsin sometime in March or April (one of those days while having a few beers) haven't been up there since 2005, was there July 4th weekend and Labor Day weekend 2005. Found this bar we really like and they seemed to like us.

Walking into Hustle Inn for Sunday morning breakfast

Okay back to the start of the ride, we get to Sparta, WI around 6pm Thursday, stop at Wayside Inn for some supper and beer for the ride, they wasn't serving anything that sounded good so we went down the street to Club 16, remembered it from last time was there. Grabbed a steak sandwich and beer to go, Sparta doesn't sell beer in grocery or convenience stores only bars and liquor stores outside of city limits.

Loaded bikes ready to ride Jim needed photo to send to person that didn't understand the concept of a loaded bike with trailer. Rolled out of Sparta around 9pm, wanted to make to first tunnel around midnight, which in all fact is only 8 miles away a gentle grade up, after a couple stops to over look some of the houses down below we made to tunnel #3 which is 3/4 of a mile long.

Ride for the Week

Been a good week for riding even with the rain. Started last Friday with a trip from work to Sully's for the Friday afternoon Bloody Mary, good trip 1 hour 18 minutes for the 16+ miles, thinging I was thirsty....... most other trips home to bike shop running less than 1:30, saving a good chunk of change not driving to and from work, I-pod and amp working just fine, can hear music over the cars vroom-vroom-vrooming by.

Didn't hook up music this morning on ride downtown was just relaxing thinking about different rides over the last few years. One that I remember real well was the one when first met Jim, Jeff had told him if you are going to ride Ragbrai you need to get a hundred mile ride in, Jim met Jeff and I at the old AK's on 5th in WDM, headed down the rabbit trail over the trestle on to Bill Riley trail going to Cummings. Made it as far as big turn in golf course when beer cart girl was going by, stopped her for a couple beersm, all the time Jim's thinking we need to get going if doing a 100 because he has been riding down to Martensdale and back a 40 mile trip, we stopped at Cumming Tap more carb loading ran into several other riders after a few more beers we headed towards Martensdale with Paul meeting us just off the trail where it crossed a gravel road about half way to town with a cooler of beer we all atned up for. Finished riding into Martensdale where we went to the resturant and bar, had some supper, Icky (Scott W.) was passed out in a booth dragged him up and started our way back to WDM, not before stopping again in Cumming, then getting off the trail in Orilla, taking the county roads back to 63rd for a final stop at Charlie's Filling Station at Midnight, told Jim that was a 100 mile day. There must have been 10-15 of us on that ride.

Mondays & Wind

What is it with Mondays and wind, seems like every time I drive into work plan on riding bike home nothing but, head wind, makes for a slower ride and being a fatman makes me work my ass off to knock out the 18 miles to Sully's for a beer. 1 hour 45 minutes later pulled into Rasmussen's Bike Shop, new tires ordered was in, had a quick beer headed over to bar for a beer and a game of video golf, got hooked on it over the winter.

Headed downtown this morning to Bike Kollective, was going to be open and sevring some sort of breakfast for Bike to Work Week. Rolled in downtown around 5:45am hung out for a while when someone showed up, Thee Rev wasn't there was on his way, riding in and picking up bagels. Took a couple photo's headed to bus stop, to grab Ankeny express.

Was good day to get out on bike, started with long about way to Sully's for a couple beers and video golf with Ron, Todd. Then headed over to Post Office for mail, on my way to A.K.'s on Westown where Conlin and the band he's in was playing around 9:30 (John's girlfriend is suppose to send me a couple photo's) stopped at Jim's on way............. His beer colder in garage was empty, threw the log a couple times for Joe (Jim's dog) had him thrash the blonde bitch (deb's dog) before riding the rest of way to A.K.'s. Left A.K.'s around midnight headed to Hy-Vee grabbed some food and headed home.................. First time this year pulled a stunt of drinking several hours, getting on bike and heading somewhere to have a couple more beers..........Out of shape

Stopped at Ladder 13 for a quick game of video golf couple more beers, Todd was driving by, came in, thought I recognized that bike, played one more game then home for a nap then back to Sully's for my 2 o'clock start work time. Same Ride, Different Day

Almost the same ride as Wednesday, stop at the Carney Marsh for a safety break.

Only thing that was different today was, Squirrel was riding his towny.

Squirrel stopped at Casey's on N.E. 14th grabbed a couple of 16oz, I made to trestle bridge a couple minutes behind Squirrel............ I was on auto pilot, followed my normal route, Brian was waiting on Hull & Cornell, then realized I turned onto Douglas, that's why I was right behind him getting on trestle bridge. Seen Jimmy & Carol on Urbandale trail walking dogs, and Bagger Mary on 48 & Franklin, other than that uneventful ride home.

Made one small comment about the world and it came up to bite me in the ass hard. Wind was out of the SSE 14mph leaving work, after meeting up with Squirrel in Carney Marsh heading towards town into nice wind, wasn't to bad going east. After the Douglas - Euclid stretch through MLK to Urbandale trail to Beaver the wind thought it would be fun to switch to SSW, plan was already in place to ride to WDM Post Office grab mail.

Made it................ Finally got the bike out, loaded up the grocery bag headed for the bus stop @ Valley West Mall, bus was there around 5:45am 20 minutes later downtown to change to the Ankeny express, 6:45 @ work. One hour and fifteen minutes later than when driving.

Saved a couple dollars not having to buy gas which was $295.9 today as went by a couple of stations. Still wondering how the State is going to come back and bite me in the ass for saving a couple bucks or how they are going to add a special tax for riding a bus or bike.

Started Wednesday afternoon to pack and load bike for ride towards Humbolt, Fishheads were playing Monday night thought no problem, ride around for a few days, catch band, head home.

Best laid plans

Finished packing bags, then moving bags around on bike so didn't inped pedaling, finally finished all that. Decided a shower would be nice before heading out, was a hot day, shower felt so good and it was still hot out thought short nap be good before making trip to Redfield for night. Woke up a couple hours later to the sounds of rain, not riding in rain, leave in morning no big deal.

Stopping @ Jim's for beer.

Good start to the morning (19th) realized forgot old maps, figured it's time for new ones heading towards Waukee, Iowa DOT welcome center by Living History Farms, rode around south side of Hickman, finally ffound it on north. Maps in hand rode towards Waukee, thought One of the bars be open @ 10:30, didn't open till 11:00 can make Adel by then.

stopped @ Jim's Raccoon River Adventures to switch out and borrow a grocery bag for carring things, had a beer talking to MK for a few while changing bags. Hopped on bike was heading out when noticed rear flat tire, okay no big deal change tube on my way.....

Wrong answer!!! Changed tube was airing up, heard it, the earth chattering KABOOM, after we got down laughing about it, MK was going up town for lunch asked if she could bring me back a large lemonade,

Lemonade and Vodka tasty treat. It was heard again the Earth chattering KABOOM , Set there the rest of afternoon drinking Vodka - lemonade. had one tube left. Jim was on his way out, had him grab me a couple more tubes, drank a few more beers and did some shots,. Didn't make it out of Adel Thursday. (to be continued)

Looking forward riding out towards the start of Ragbrai, several people leaving tonight heading for Redfield for first leg of journey. talked with Jim, he's stick biking it towards Spencer, no bags carrying a Camelback Mule with a couple biking shorts and jerseys, hoteling it, having driving up friends carry his tent, and sleeping bag. (p*ssy) he is leaving friday for Jefferson.

Uneventful Weekend

Moved I-pod up to space bar Saturday morning before heading of to a ride, can change music rolling down the road. Left camera at home could have used it while out. Dropped Squirrel's Nano off after hitting Post Office, Rassy's for some air in tires, down the trail I go, Set myself up for a ride out and back to be a Sully's at noon when they opened, riding the levey over by Demans Woods single track I hear Craig like a beer, turned bike around thought I was hearing things or just thinking outloud again, Found Justin and several others just inside the trail having a beer, they was just finishing up cutting grass and cleaning up trail. Sounds like sometime this week might hear from Melissa, looking forward to that.

Nice vacation from the 20th till the 24th, going tubing on the upper Iowa River with some friends from Sully's, sorry no pictures left camera home thought it would be used on me after last year.

Next Vacation coming up in July the 19th through 29th, don't know if riding towards start of Ragbrai or working for the bike shop, will bring photo's of that.

Took Friday off, spent a few hours helping out at bike shop, then went for a ride with drinking involved. Saturday was back at shop by 9:00am worked till around 7:00 then did some more things after Donny came back from Tri packet pick-up, Dinner at Greg's around 10:00pm, home and back up down to 63rd & grand to watch Tri-amatuers ride towards Jordan Creek Mall and back(photo's to come later 110 need to go through) Giff's for a cheap breakfast but, great food. then off to shop again @ 11:00am riders showing up ready to have bikes boxed up and shipped home, helped a few customers, down to see if we can watch end of Pro-Tri, made it for last lap with winner Rasmus Henning

Woke up a little early this morning thought I might go ahead jump on bike and ride into work vs. taking bus in. Was having good ride, when hit a pothole on Hickman & 46th didn't think much about it until was heading down Urbandale towards bike trail and rear end was getting squirrelly, stopped turned off tunes flipped bike over to change tube on rear wheel, finished up in good time started down trail, computer wasn't working, forgot to start music. Ducked off trail at Morningside headed over the Interstate stopped to get pivture of sunrise, major cloud cover. Restarted tunes, fixed computer rode rest way into work without any more mishaps

Interesting time over in Nebraska, State park that doesn't allow drinking? Met CVO downtown and went to lunch at Noodle's, set outside watching all the bikes in town, bike lanes down the middle of the street one way travel, bike poles for locking bikes up and down all streets, was really a bike friendly town, must be with College right there, didn't even get to make remarks about Cornholers, maybe next year................. We had a sweet set-up at the race, looked as good as the pro's that was there, thought we did a good job of representing Rasmussen's Bike Shop. If only bike would have cooperated...............

Little cool this morning, grabbed the bus into work, riding home to pack. going with Squirrel over to Nebraska, Nebraska that's what I said, squirrel doing a 12 hour race at Branch Oak Lake, going to work support for him, did it last year at 24 hour race in Boone. Rode downtown to pick up bike to work socks Saturday, ran into Squirrel & Teri heading downtown also. Did a short turn through Farmer's market, then headed back to westside. Decided I was going through Waterworks Park and rabbit trail, wrong idea, wasn't going to let a little water stop me, even though it took longer to find away around the water, than to go back and ride Grand or Ingersoll.

Met Jim & Jeff over at Raccoon River Park, to go out on kayaks, then decided it was a good idea to pass this time, didn't want to be the first one to tip over.

Riding home from Ankeny yesterday, didn't stop at O'Malley's was only couple miles into ride, Casey's for a tallboy while hunting shrooms, thought okay ride into downtown to bar a Ragbrai rider owned, IT WAS under new OWNERS and CLOSED........ no Beer till West Des Moines, stopped at walking bridge over Raccoon river for smoke, Jeff called he had flat and wrong tube with him, needed me to head home pick up truck to get him. After that we stopped at shop so he could pick up his Long Haul Trucker, headed to Taco ride, beer and back to 5th st. pub for BEER and 1.50 tacos

Amp for bicycle showed up yesterday, eight batteries and normal stereo speaker wiring to amp it was blasting out good tunes... The 3.5 inch speakers due a good job with 10 amps per side, looking for a couple small indoor/outdoor for sound and I should have a nice sounding system on my bicycle.........

Got a GREAT recipe for shrooms.... clean (DO NOT CUT) shrooms, then fill with a mixture of cream cheese, jalapinos, onion, garlic, salt, and pepper. (fill shroom by adding mixture to a zip lock baggie and cut off the corner of the bag and use it like a pastry frosting bag to fill the body of the shroom)-then roll in egg and then flour. Put a toothpick down thru the stem to pinch it closed-fry in deep fat fryer till golden brown and enjoy!!!
